STRATA#4 · QUAYOLA
Strata #4 is a immersive video-installation commissioned by Palais de Beaux Arts in Lille. The subject of this work is a series of iconic pieces from the museum’s Flemish collection, focusing specifically on Rubens’ and Van Dyck’s grand altarpieces. Strata #4 is the result of a study and exploration of the paintings themselves, delving beneath their figurative appearance and looking at the very rules behind the composition, colour schemes and proportions of each piece. It is a precise process aimed at creating new contemporary images based on universal rules of beauty and perfection. Documenting the improbable collisions between classical figuration and contemporary abstraction, Strata #4 aims to create an harmonious dialogue between worlds that may appear very distant from one another, but in fact share so much in common.
Quayola is a visual artist based in London. He investigates dialogues and the unpredictable collisions, tensions and equilibriums between the real and artificial, the figurative and abstract, the old and new. His work explores photography, geometry, time-based digital sculptures and immersive audiovisual installations and performances.
SOUND OF THE WAVES · Yuri Suzuki
Sound of the Waves is a simulation of sea wave patterns. It picks up the patterns from site specific beaches in the world and plays it back acoustically via the African Rainstick.
The unpredictable nature of wave patterns are known to give people comfort. This installation looks to create ‘white noise’ to open up the consciousness to find comfort and enjoyment.
The paired back installation brings the acoustics to the forefront of the viewer, removing any unnecessary excess. This allows for the acoustics to travel through the brain changing the viewers’ brainwaves and chemical messages which could alter their state.
Both the residency and the work to be produced are part of the L.E.V. 2015 programme, a festival co-produced by LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial.
Yuri Suzuki (Tokyo, 1980) is a sound artist, designer and electronic musician who produces work that explores
the realms of sound through exquisitely designed pieces. Between 1999 and 2005 he worked for Japanese art unit
Maywa Denki, where he developed a strong interest in music and technology. In 2005 he moved
to London to study at the Royal College of Art.
Suzuki’s work raises questions of the relation between sound and people and how music and sound
affect people’s mind. Suzuki’s sound art pieces and installations have been shown in exhibitions
all around the world.
NEW LOCATIONS IN THE BOTANICAL GARDEN
La Pradera de la Aliseda is the new location inside the Botanical Garden where the day shows of the 9th Edition will be taking place .
Once we go past the former location for other editions, the area of the Boreal pond, a wooden footbridge leads us to visit one of the best preserved alder tree areas in the north of Spain.
In it the Red Bull Music Academy will be presenting the live shows by Yosi Horikawa and Daisuke Tanabe, who will be sharing the stage with two local artists Skygaze and Memorabilia, to make us enjoy their sound proposals in a stunning natural environment ; the timetable has been extended and it now lasts until 17:00.
This more spacious location aims at accommodating the audience more comfortably and will offer, apart from a good bar service, street food stalls where delicous snacks can be tasted. ( should the weather conditions be adverse, the activities will be moved to another area of the Botanical Garden, called Rionda)
“AXIAL “ AT GIJON´S MARINA.
As the opening activity for the new edition of L.E.V. , the collective Playmid, who are regular collaborators of the festival, will be presenting their project Axial at Gijon´s Marina , from 3Oth April to May 1st , between 21:30 and 00:30 h. It is a free activity that caters for all types of public in a very special environment as that of Punta Liquerique del Muelle de Gijón.
Axial is a futuristic audiovisual immersive space designed for public spaces. A light corridor the audience passes through while living a powerful synaesthetic experience, creating light architectures which evolve in space and time, creating alive forms and giving birth to sound geometries, audiovisual architectures which surround the audience in a dance of light.
Playmid will be taking part in L.E.V. 2015 sharing the lighting scenography designed by Pelayo Rodriguez especially for the Nave de LABoral Centro de Arte stage, where some of the musical performances will be staged.
Dynamic lighting architecture reacting to sound pulses will take the audience to an abstract universe of light, drawings and shapes.
And to finish off with the collaborations between sound artists and visual ones, we announce that there will be a collaboration between the visual artist Alba G. Corral who will be joining the polyhedral project Kidsuke in the Nave de LABoral for a live performance.
