L.E.V. arrives at CURTOCIRCUÍTO Festival with cutting-edge art pieces and AV directs

L.E.V. Festival will be one of the leading festivals of the next edition of CURTOCIRCUITO, the International Film Festival of Santiago de Compostela.

Thus, the participation of L.E.V. in Curtocircuito will consist of a projection of art pieces, which try to offer an approach to the spirit of the festival, and two live performances that escape from the traditional idea of “concert” to compose performances that combine music and video.

L.E.V. selection will be screened in NUMAX on Saturday 10th October. It collects a set of proposals that experiment with cutting-edge visual motifs to develop new narratives linked directly with sound.

This fusion of music and video is particularly important in the direct of Yro, French artist who was one of the great sensations of the last L.E.V. His show Triangles Irascibles is a cinematic experience like no other. It is a “one-man-show” which manipulates photos directly, while selecting extracts that creates musical synesthesia, echoes and audiovisual geometries. The show will take place in the SGAE Foundation on Saturday night October 10th.

It will be followed by the performance of Skygaze and the Asturian collective Fium. The sounds of Skygaze, who is already a reference on the national scene, move between downtempo, ambient, hip hop and future jazz, in the wake of Flying Lotus.

The tickets for this double show are available now through the Curtocircuito website. The price is  8 euros in advance and 10 at the box office.

LATEST ADDITIONS

STRATA#4 · QUAYOLA

Strata #4 is a immersive video-installation commissioned by Palais de Beaux Arts in Lille. The subject of this work is a series of iconic pieces from the museum’s Flemish collection, focusing specifically on Rubens’ and Van Dyck’s grand altarpieces. Strata #4 is the result of a study and exploration of the paintings themselves, delving beneath their figurative appearance and looking at the very rules behind the composition, colour schemes and proportions of each piece. It is a precise process aimed at creating new contemporary images based on universal rules of beauty and perfection. Documenting the improbable collisions between classical figuration and contemporary abstraction, Strata #4 aims to create an harmonious dialogue between worlds that may appear very distant from one another, but in fact share so much in common.

Quayola is a visual artist based in London. He investigates dialogues and the unpredictable collisions, tensions and equilibriums between the real and artificial, the figurative and abstract, the old and new. His work explores photography, geometry, time-based digital sculptures and immersive audiovisual installations and performances.

LEV2015_YuriSuzuki_0_596

SOUND OF THE WAVES · Yuri Suzuki

Sound of the Waves is a simulation of sea wave patterns. It picks up the patterns from site specific beaches in the world and plays it back acoustically via the African Rainstick.

The unpredictable nature of wave patterns are known to give people comfort. This installation looks to create ‘white noise’ to open up the consciousness to find comfort and enjoyment.

The paired back installation brings the acoustics to the forefront of the viewer, removing any unnecessary excess. This allows for the acoustics to travel through the brain changing the viewers’ brainwaves and chemical messages which could alter their state.

Both the residency and the work to be produced are part of the L.E.V. 2015 programme, a festival co-produced by LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial.

Yuri Suzuki (Tokyo, 1980) is a sound artist, designer and electronic musician who produces work that explores
the realms of sound through exquisitely designed pieces. Between 1999 and 2005 he worked for Japanese art unit
Maywa Denki, where he developed a strong interest in music and technology. In 2005 he moved
to London to study at the Royal College of Art.

Suzuki’s work raises questions of the relation between sound and people and how music and sound
affect people’s mind. Suzuki’s sound art pieces and installations have been shown in exhibitions
all around the world.

Ben Frost  A U R O R A  w/ MFO

Ben Frost is back to The Laboratory of  Visual Electronics to present his AV version of A U R O R A, a sensational piece of work that has been both critically acclaimed by the press and the public as best record of 2014.

This new collaboration between Ben Frost and MFO, first debuted at Poland’s Unsound Festival in 2014, focuses in on one of the permeating themes of Frost´s most recent Lp A U R O R A… Light.

Frost’s mandate was that it should “feel like being inside a particle accelerator“. Not a vj set, and well beyond the realm of standard fare festival lighting, MFO’s performance sits at the forefront of hijacked digital technology.

LEV_2015_Legowelt_Bio

ALIEN ATMOSPHERES

Electronic dance music will be represented by two of the greatest  European names  coming from electro sound territories, Legowelt and Bochum Welt. Raw beats, alien atmospheres and a generous dose of acid sequences.

Danny Wolfers aka Legowelt is truly one of a kind – a producer and performer -who spans many different scenes with ease and always dwels in his own unique style, a world away from the usual hype or trends of any given day. His unique style comes form an unfaltering devotion to hardware and his output veers from dense and foresty techno to whizzing electro, deeper electronic and stuff for which there isn’t even a name yet. His is an unstoppable musical force that is always evolving.

Bochum Welt is the stage name of Gianluigi Di Costanzo who has been releasing music for several years  on BMG and Rephlex, Aphex Twin’s record label . Gianlugi was even rumoured to be Richard D. James in disguise but actually wasn´t. Bochum Welt took half  Europe  by storm with his 2009 double album Robotic Operating Buddy, on Rephlex, and L.E.V. Festival will be Bochum Welt´s first live performance in Spain, where he will be performing his latest album, Good Programs ( to be colored in yellow ).

LEV_2015_AKKORD-Bio

MIND ELECTRONICS

Mind electronics will be showcased at L.E.V. by some of the most outstanding projects. Senking, Akkord and Architectural will be taking us into the darkest deep hollow underground .

Since their highly sought after, anonymous white label debuts in 2012, Akkord have established themselves as one of the UK’s most intriguing club acts, circumnavigating the spectrum of bass culture and creating a highly developed mixture of minimalism, atmospheric metallic ambience, techno and jungle for next-level post-rave dancefloor workouts.

Senking´s sound, a fine blend of dub and electronics, builds up atmospheres that make us plunge into the ocean, miles below sea level. He is one of the pioneers of the so-called raster-noton sound who, for years,  only had the idea to create images in the listener´s head just by playing his music  but  who now has taken a step forward by adding visuals to his live shows.

Architectural will be performing his album called Secret Chapter live for the first time in Gijon, which was released in his own label Architectural Recs. Organic techno, shaped after a great respect for the classics from Detroit and the old IDM school. His work is ready  to design the structure for a new sound based on genuine soul which unravels an artist who has a lot to say about the evolution of deep mind electronics.

FOCUS JAPAN

Under the name of Focus Japan, The  Laboratory of Visual Electronics puts forward  a  series  of proposals  that bring together some of the most interesting artists in Asia. Red Bull Music Academy presents Daisuke Tanabe, Kidsuke, a collaborative project between Tanabe (JP) and Kidkanevil (UK), and Yosi Horikawa.

Daisuke Tanabe´s music is very playful and atomospheric at the same time and gets its inspiration straight from his surroundings, and just like his friend Yosi he takes all sorts of environmental sounds to express himself throughout his tracks

Kidsuke is a collaborative project between Kidkanevil (UK) and Daisuke (JP) that was born when they met at Red Music Academy in London. Their music blends the lightness of childhood and the insistence of rhythm with clever electronic wizardry, Brit ravey breaks for a soundtrack to a future city theme park.

NEW AUDIO-VISUAL ENVIRONMENTS

Aiming at a further investigation of the evolution of new audio-visual languages, L.E.V. presents two of the most interesting current acts, Nicolas Bernier and Playmid, with projects that go beyond classic formats and who propose highly hypnotic inmersion experiences.

Frequencies (light quanta) is the latest audiovisual installation by Montreal sound artist Nicolas Bernier, a work that was coproduced by LABoral and Perte de Signal with the support of L.E.V. in August 2014 in their SoundLAB.

The project is based on Bernier´s ever growing fascination towards science, light and basic sound generation process, pursuing his research by focusing on the quantum- the smallest measurable value of energy.

The project is based on the conceptual relationships between basic quantum physics principles  applied to the audiovisual creative process: particles, probabilities, wave / particle duality and discontinuity.

The architectural structure of frequencies (light quanta) is a poetic reading of  machines and electronic circuits that are bringing a better understanding and visualization of the infinitesimal world. Despite all its technical complexity Nicolas Bernier places himself somewhere between the old and the new in a totally handcrafted artistic process.

LEV_2015_PlayMid_bio2

The collective PlayMid who makes regular appearances at the festival will be presenting their project Axial, a futuristic audiovisual immersive space. A light corridor the audience passes through while living a powerful synaesthetic experience. Light architectures are created through the digital manipulation of motorized light beams and RGB fixtures, which evolve in space and time creating alive forms. Sound design is unlinkable from dynamic lighting, as it belongs to the same logic system, giving birth to sound geometries, audiovisual architectures which surround the audience in a dance of light.

NEAR FUTURE

The long artistic career and experience of some of projects in this edition of The Laboratory of Visual Electronics is in contrast with the youth and quality of some the names who, undoubtedly, have a promising future. Theirs is highly sensitive and emotional music, as in Skygaze´s case, or restless as in Memorabilia´s .

Skygaze´s music has a strong melodic character and combines deep basses with ambient passages and downtempo rhythms while Memorabilia is an old time Asturian producer who is a 7 inch vinyl hunter , an authentic music devourer, whose live set  ranges from uncomfortable gloomy dance music (UGDM) , classic electronic sounds, pastoral soundscapes and why not , early 80s drenched synthetic flavours . Their sounds will blend in with those coming from the Botanical gardends where they will be performing.

A MYTH MAKES A COMEBACK  · CABARET VOLTAIRE.

Richard H. Kirk has chosen L.E.V. Festival for Cabaret Voltaire´s rare second live performance, in over 20 years at L.E.V. Festival right after  that of  August last year’sat Berlin´s Atonal Festival.  It is a unique chance to enjoy the new work by one of the pillars of current electronic music and  one of the great visionaries of our time.

Cabaret Voltaire has been one of the most important and influential bands of industrial and electronic music since its very first appearance at the forefront of the UK Electronic Movement of the late 70´s. Way ahead of their time, Cabaret´s blend of  industrial, techno, dub and experimental music, no doubt,  turned them into one of the most influential acts in the last 40 years.

With a line-up now consisting solely of machines, multi-screen projections and Richard H. Kirk, this will be the second Cabaret Voltaire performance since November 1992, and will feature exclusively new material with no place for nostalgia. The performance promises to be something relevant for the first Cabaret Voltaire incursion into the 21st Century.

NEW VISIONS · THE NEW PARADIGM.

The darkest rythms and industrial sounds will be heard once more at L.E.V. 2015 thanks to Gazelle Twin, Elizabeth Bernholz´s moniker, who released Unflesh in 2014, one of the most outstanding records by a genuinely fascinating artist. She belongs alongside the likes of Holly Herndon,  Katie Gately and The Knife as the key exponents of the new genderless school of thought in vocal music. Unflesh is a truly exceptional piece of work , and the sound of an artist trailblazing through as of yet, uninhabited territories.

Blanck Mass will be in charge of bringingback the light, or in other words, Benjamin John Power, the man behind Blanck Mass is one half of the  great blissed-out UK duo, Fuck Buttons, who will show us his new work when he gets to L.E.V.  After his latest self-titled EP released on Software, (Daniel Lopatin´s label ) he has fallen into more beat-driven territories, close to the epic sounds of Fuck Buttons, and has received unanimous support from both the audience and the media, touring as main support to the likes of Sigur Ros and Jon Hopkins.  Ben is currently putting the finishing touches on his next LP as the protean Blanck Mass and is eager to unveil his new and overwhelming offerings live at L.E.V.

AUDIO-VISUAL MANIPULATION ·  PARALLEL WORLDS.

The live audio-visual  performances of Transform and Yro, Paul Prudence and the collaboration of the visual  artist Alba G. Corral with Jacaszek swell the ranks of audio-visual performances that, year after year, L.E.V. Festival showcases as an account of what is going on in today’s  audio-visual creation forefront.

Bsynthome will be in charge of the audio-visual manipulation, which is the second part of a performance trilogy examining complex systems designed by Transforma and Yro, an enviroment composed of kinetic installations, incomprehensible instruments, video cameras / projections and objects resembling primitive organisms, geologic finds or artifacts extracted from a trip back in time.  It´s an impacting and emotive performance that destroys the barriers between the analogue and the digital world.

In addition, Paul Prudence will be unravelling his computational live cinematic visual-music  universe with his performance  Cyclotone (2nd version), a high-voltage live, audio-visual show in which he invites to visualize a whirlwind of data in real time.

L.E.V. curates a unique  live collaboration between Jacaszek´s work, a Polish artist who will be showing us Glimmer, his record from 2011, and Alba G. Corral´s abstract digital landscape.  A melange of classical instrumentation and blurred, rubbed-down electronic textures, heir to artists as Tim Hecker, and ethereal images provided by Alba G .Corral, will give birth to an  intense catharsis, anexploratory experience both physically and mentally.

FOCUS JAPAN.

Yosi Horikawa, a Japanese producer hailing from Osaka, is one of the artists that will bring Eastern electronic music closer to us , thus the name for this section of the programme, Focus Japan. Yosi´s  music truly deserves the adjective “original”.Whether it be birds chirping in the forest , the everyday sounds of a city or even the noises your kitchen utensils can make, for Yosi, everything has the potential to be turned into a track.

Vapor is his latest release on First Word, a tightly-woven sonic journey that benefits from repeated listenings.
