RED BULL MUSIC ACADEMY PRESENTS ALEX SMOKE L.O.W. A/V FEAT. FLORENCE TO
L.E.V., with the collaboration of Red Bull Music Academy, presents an audiovisual live show by Alex Smoke, playing his new work L.O.W., Love Over Will, with the collaboration of visual artist Florence To.
This is a special adaptation of his acclaimed new work, which places him on the forefront of a techno sound evolved from chaos, navigating on several layers of filtered voices and sharp sounds that float over his signature emotional arrangements and electronic beats.
The visual work by Florence To creates immersive, sensorial and digital landscapes, in an attempt to generate a synesthetic experience that will be enjoyed by audiences of Laboratorio de Electrónica Visual.
KUEDO LIVE A/V FEAT WERKFLOW
Since the release of his seminal Severant album, Kuedo has been paving out new roads for his uniquely enthralling, futuristic sci-fi soundtracks, with an increasing focus on sound-design and composition. Recent commissions for games, digital art and motion projects include a recent score for The Sprawl; a film for strategic design agency Metahaven.
Kuedo also last year co-founded – together with Joe Shakespeare – the art and music imprint Knives, which saw his highly-awaited, and critically-acclaimed new release, Assertion of a Surrounding Presence EP, which The Quietus eloquently reviewed as dipping a toe into the future, dares to bring back a drop.
All these roads have now converged into the creation of his brand new AV live show, premiering in 2016 with material from his upcoming album. It sees a collaboration with deviceful digital arts studio Werkflow, constructed with next generation game engine technology they perform immersive real-time animations; the result is a visceral live show spectacle of sight and sound that will be one of the must-sees for this year.
CAO YUXI PRESENTA MACROCOSM.
Cao Yuxi is a young Chinese artist based in New York and with connections to a group of audiovisual creators belonging to the “New Media” scene. These artists are interested in the visualization of sound, computation, interactivity, design and all their confluence points.
James Yuxi will arrive in Gijón to present his audiovisual performance Macrocosm. Synchronism, science-fiction aesthetics, synesthesy and abstract images, all mixed up in a trip from the infinitesimal to the cosmic, full of exploding galaxies and expanding black holes, where high-resolution image and sound blend into one.
Raquel Meyers, a Spanish visual artist based in Sweden, with strong links to the 8-bit scene, Pixel Art and arcade video game aesthetics, comes back to L.E.V. to create a collaboration with the prolific Datassette.
Her work, triggered from two vintage Commodore 64 computers, will be the perfect companion to Datassette’s live act. One of the strongest, weirdest and most playful acts in the audiovisual experimental scene.
BOTANIC GARDEN: LCC AND BASSBOSS
The Botanic Garden, one of the most charming settings of the Festival, will host part of the daytime events. Asturian artists LCC and Bass Boss will add to other already announced acts such as Pole and Ametsub.
LCC, a band full of creativity, comes back to the Festival to introduce us to its brand new material. Their show will reveal the new sounds they have been working on last year. Some of them have been produced during their artistic residence at Stockholm’s EMS Studios. where they had the chance to work with legendary modular Buchla 200 and Serge synthesizers.
Bass Boss is a very young Asturian artist that creates exquisite, highly personal music. His work is influenced by international IDM, bass scene and the new wave of futuristic electronic music created by artists as Kuedo. He also has strong bonds with the local scene, and he will premiere his new work at L.E.V. in a very special stage: the Botanic Garden.
NEW LOCATIONS AROUND TOWN
FRED PENELLE & YANNICK JACQUET (ANTIVJ). JOANIE LEMERCIER. SONICS ROBOTS. OSCAR MULERO.
In its search for the evolution of new audiovisual languages, L.E.V., presents two of the most remarkable current names from this scene: Antivj and artist Joanie Lemercier, both with projects that transcend classic formats.
Both shows will take place at several downtown museum spaces: Hall 1 at Centro de Cultura Antiguo Instituto and the Barjola Museum Chapel. Apart from these one setting, the Revillagigedo Museum Chapel will also host several events, to create a circuit around town where different interventions and activities will take place.
JOANIE LEMERCIER: WALL DRAWING L.E.V. 2016. CAPILLA DEL MUSEO BARJOLA
This piece is part of Wall Drawing, a series of audiovisual installations where the visuals are directly drawn over the walls, and then augmented with a light projection, in order to alter our senses by generating impossible volumes and depth.
The visuals are formed by straight lines and repetitive, simple patterns representing a structure of landscapes, rocks, planets and caves, heavily inspired by Sol Lewitt’s mural paintings.
Joanie Lemercier is one of the founding members of the highly acclaimed Antivj visual label, pioneering creators of video art in digital environments, and audiovisual projects with music artists such as Emptyset, James Ginzburg or Principles of Geometry.
From 2013 on, Joanie has dissociated himself from Antivj visual label in order to pursue solo projects, revealing himself as an artist of the highest sensitivity in the digital experimental art scene.
FRED PENELLE & YANNICK JACQUET (ANTIVJ): MÉCANIQUES DISCURSIVES. SALA 1 / CENTRO DE CULTURA ANTIGUO INSTITUTO
As time runs faster everyday and our life pace gets more frantic by the moment, Fred Penelle & Yannick Jaquet, from Antivj visual label, give us some breathing space.
During their show, a strange mechanism will emerge from the walls in Centro de Cultura Antiguo Instituto Hall One, one full of mysterious characters, shadows and strange, mechanical objects, to make us doubt if we are watching a lab experiment or a plan for a future ecosystem.
Mécaniques Discursives swim between two different eras: the Guttemberg times, full of mechanical contraptions, and Big Data age A very striking contrast is created between the mechanic techniques used to reproduce images, and the state-of-the-art digital technologies. Both are used to convey a deconstructed narrative, a script formed by a thousand stories.
Paying attention to the smallest detail, the narrative creates false connections, routes and itineraries, a true invitation to dream on.
Yannick Jacquet is Legoman, one of the founding members of the Antivj visual label, and the mind behind, among others, the audiovisual live act of the Lumisokea project. Fred Penelle is a visual artist with strong connections to the world of stage design, to which he adds his characteristic imaginary worlds.
SONIC ROBOTS PRESENTS GLITCH ROBOT. REVILLAGIGEDO PALACE CHAPEL.
The work of Sonic Robots (Moritz Simon Geist) is about some of the most transcendent issues about the near future: our perception of technology, the robotization of society and artificial intelligence, always from the most ludic, entertaining side of electronic music.
Sonic Robots will present, again at the Revillagigedo Palace Chapel, the musical performance GLITCH ROBOT, all created live by robots, to explore the borders between machine noise, the intricacies of its mechanics and robotic bass music.
The machines used in this performance were made out of recycled and 3D printed components: hard discs, power relays, motors, solenoids… This experience has been created with the help of pioneer band Mouse On Mars, which will be accompanied by Sonic Robots in their forthcoming and spectacular live show.
OSCAR MULERO PRESENTS MONOCHOME. REVILLAGIGEDO PALACE CHAPEL.
The Revillagigedo Palace Chapel will host the dark, brainy electronic sounds of one of the most notorious European names in techno music, Óscar Mulero. Throbbing beats and thick atmospheres.
Oscar Mulero, a truly one of a kind artist, embraces different scenes but always manages to contribute his personal vision. His unique style comes from an obsessive devotion to sound. His innate creativity makes him jump from dense, deep techno sounds (released on his own label Pole Group) to more experimental electronica.
A constantly evolving artist that visits L.E.V. for the first time to premiere his new, yet unreleased work, in which he departs from his usual techno style to show us a more experimental side.
JÄGERMUSIC SHOWCASE. LABORAL UNIVERSITY CAFETERIA
On Saturday April 30 at the Laboral University Cafeteria we will enjoy live shows by BSN Posse (Málaga), and JMII contributed by Jägermusic, and Condres (Asturias), supported by Festival L.E.V.
Málaga’s BSN Posse have created one of the most powerful albums in the last years: Southern Trax, chosen by critics and fans as one of the best of 2015.
Spanish Footwork heroes BSN Posse’s highly melodic music combines deep frequencies from London bass music with hip-hop, jungle and sampledelia. JMII, from the Hivern label, invites us to a live show full of dance beats connected to Detroit House and visionaries as Model 500 or Laurent Garnier. Surely one of the most playful acts in L.EV. Festival.
Condres is the alter ego of Luis Sierra, who started making music on 2002 under the moniker Penca Catalogue. He recreates the inexhaustible British Continuum Hardcore phenomenon, infected with traces of pop music and shoegaze layers. A really amazing trip that doesn’t follow the rules of that mind’s invention we call time, boasting with its best weapon, the mixture of styles, with strength and serenity.
WORKSHOP: MAP ON MASK
As we previously mentioned. we really want to trace the evolution of new audiovisual languages, and this is connected to Workshop: MAP ON MASK, which aims to establish connections between different disciplines by applying the video mapping technique to volumetric objects.
The main aim of this workshop, hosted by LABoral Centro de Arte and included in the schedule of activities of the ENCAC (European Network for Contemporary Audiovisual Creation), is to create a space to play and investigate the video mapping technique and its different usages, the starting point being the application to volumetric objects.
During 4 days, the students will explore new techniques for software, electronics, LED lighting, video mapping and interactive installations – all in one place.
By Mike Latona, aka Los Hermanos. Visual artist, VJ, mapper, painter and graphic designer.
